PRACTICAL SERVICE GUIDE

Dead legs & redundant pipework: planning remedial work

How to prepare a useful enquiry when your report recommends pipework or outlet changes.

Why redundant pipework matters

HSE guidance highlights preventing water stagnation, including by removing redundant pipework, as part of controlling Legionella risk. If an assessment flags dead legs or unused pipework, the relevant finding should be considered in the context of the whole system.

Start with the actual recommendation

Reports can recommend changes to redundant pipework, outlets or other parts of the system. Share the wording and its location in the building so the enquiry is tied to a specific finding.

Add the site context

Photographs, marked drawings and details of access help explain the work. Include whether the area is occupied and whether water isolation would affect other parts of the building.

Separate the scope from the schedule

A deadline matters, but so does knowing exactly what is being requested. List the relevant recommendations and flag any access windows or related works. The scope and timing can then be discussed together.

Close the loop with your records

Ask what documentation will accompany the agreed works and who will update the building’s records. Keep the conversation connected to the original report and your ongoing water hygiene arrangements.
